THIRD ANNUAL AMATEUR CHESS TOURNAMENT
BRINGS COMMUNITY TOGETHER AT HOLLINS MARKET JUNE 16
Can playing the game of chess help build community and encourage individuals to think differently and strategize to improve their lives? Baltimore’s Quiet Time Inspirations gift shop owner and minister Kim Hicks believes so. That’s why she’s organized the Third Annual Amateur Chess Tournament Saturday, June 16 (Father’s Day weekend) at the historic Hollins Market in Baltimore. Community Partners include Southwest Partnership, Baltimore Public Markets and WOLB Radio.
The tournament is open to players of all ages who want to have fun and hone problem-solving skills together, while competing for a chance to win prizes ranging from $25 to $100.
According to Kim, chess is becoming increasingly popular in the local community with many residents ordering their own sets. Last year's tournament attracted players and onlookers from Virginia DC in the Maryland suburbs as well as Baltimore City and counties. Participants ranged in age from 6 to 70.
The 2018 tournament takes place outdoors at the Carrollton Avenue entrance to the Market (26 S. Arlington Avenue 21223). The schedule is:
• 12-12:45 pm On site player registration
• 1 to 4 pm Tournament underway
• 5 pm Tournament ends
The $15 registration fee includes game play, a swag bag filled with goodies, coupons, and more. Participants can register in advance on the Quiet Times Inspiration Facebook page or on Eventbrite.com. Discounts are offered for group registrations. More information is available by calling Quiet Time Inspirations @ 410-962-8540 , 410-370-7385 or on Facebook.
