The heart of Federal Hill's business district, Cross Street Market was originally built in 1846 to serve the growing population of South Baltimore. The Market is nestled between the north and south sides of East Cross Street and runs the entire length of the block between Charles and Light Streets. One of the country's oldest public markets, Cross Street Market began a renovation and revitalization project in early 2018. In November, the Market closed as construction expanded; and in Spring 2019 Cross Street Market will be home to more than two dozen independently owned and operated businesses, all in a historic building. Cross Street Market is also home to the Cross Street Farmers' Market, which runs Saturdays May-October.
